Cansino-Dizon, Haro-Balingit advance in Kadayawan netfest
By Marianne L. Saberon Abalayan

DAVAO City's Juan Paolo Cansino and Andrei Dizon along with the tandem of Juremy Haro and Jervis Balingit advanced to the next round after beating rivals in the opener of the 2007 Kadayawan Age-Group Doubles Tennis Championships at the Ecoland Phase 4 Tennis Club courts Saturday.

Top-seed Cansino-Dizon, who drew a bye in the first round, , routed General Santos bets Rey Perez and Paulo Ramos, 10-1, while Haro-Balingit survived a 10-8 win over Angelo Canceras and Nano A¤ana in the 14 years old and 16 years old boys doubles event.

Perez-Ramos earlier walloped Jervel Mutya-Gian Vicencio, 10-2, in the netfest sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional director Juanito "Titong" Cansino, Jr.

Haro-Balingit will next play against second-seed Princeton Gerapusco and Andrei Banate who eliminated Paterno Celeste-A. Pangilinan, 10-0.

In other matches, Paolo Colmenares and Boboy Sison combined forces to beat Jeffrey Casanillo and John Añana, 10-2, while Jecco Lapiz and Alwin Libaton shutout Dodong Zapanta and Dongkoy Guira of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), 10-0.

Lapiz-Libaton will collide with Fritz Domingo-Eric Atillo who disposed of Christopher Agravador and Jason Rolen, 10-3, in the meet that stakes cash prizes and trophies to the winners.

In 10-under unisex doubles, Davao's Jenni Celine Dizon and Rody Mar Ibareta lost to Kurt Rodriguez and Justine Guerra, 3-10.

The tournament is presented by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office.

It was supposed to open at the Davao Capitol Tennis Club (DCTC) but Davao Association of Tennis Clubs (Datec) was also holding its Kadayawan tournament, which is not city-funded, at the same venue.

Cansino said, "The city sports office sent a letter to DCTC last August 8 and it was received by their vice-president. We were thinking all the while that we can hold the tournament there since their vice-president okayed the letter."

He said a staff from the SDD-CMO had quoted city auditor Alex Cal that they were directed to use DCTC so that the city government won't have to pay rental fees.

Seeing Datec members in full force at DCTC, Cansino decided to bring the players, including those coming from as far as Cotabato, Digos, Tagum and other parts of Mindanao, to Eco 4 instead just to push through with the tournament.

"We had to transfer to another venue where the city will have to pay rental fee because we were left without a choice, otherwise, we will have to cancel the competition. But it would be too late to do that since we have out-of-town players who came to play and take part of the Kadayawan festivities," he added.

The netfest also features a 14-16 girls doubles and pro-am doubles events. (MLSA)
