Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Labor department picks topics for LHP program By Joy Romares-Sevilla
THE regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) identified important topics, which will be discussed with companies who want to avail of the Labor Relations, Human Relations, and Productivity (LHP) program of the agency.
Dole Regional Director Ponciano Ligutom told Sun.Star recently that the topics outlined for the program are essential to boost the workforce's productivity of the region.
"Davao Region ranked number five in terms of human productivity, NCR (National Capital Region) tops all regions in the country," Ligutom said.
Ligutom earlier revealed that Dole-Southern Mindanao works hard to boost human productivity in the region. In fact, Davao ranked number one in promoting the human productivity through advocating the LHP program of the government, which aims to boost human productivity and competitiveness.
For Labor Relations (LR), the basic concepts and employment relationship, the employee discipline and due process, the labor dispute settlement mechanisms, and the collective bargaining in every company are outlined.
Dole also discusses the map of HRM territory, labor relations framework, exercise of management prerogative, contractual limitations, and the management responsibilities under the LR module.
Meanwhile, for the human relations (HR), understanding human needs, understanding cultural behavior and traits, and understanding organizational communication are stressed out. These three topics have several sub-topics which Dole will further discuss.
For the productivity, on the other hand, topics on the effects of global competition to consumers and producers, and the options for a company whether to sink or swim are outlined.
Dole also tries to explain what is productivity, how to measure it, and how to increase it.
The department likewise discusses the fundamental requirements for a productivity improvement program, tools and techniques, benefits, and Dole productivity services.
Dole said the topics that are outlined for the LHP program are just ticklers; they will be discussed in a six-hour seminar. Companies who wish to have another set of discussion, need to request for another seminar which Dole identifies as specialized topics that are also necessary for a company's improvement.
