Nat’l table tennis competition fires off Sept. 29
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

THE National Table Tennis Team Championship is set on September 29 and 30 at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Gym.

Former Metro Davao Table Tennis Association (Medatta) president Friendee Nuñez Wednesday said current RP team members can play only as a third player of any team entered in the competition that features a men's team and women's singles divisions.

Nuñez said the men's team champion will go home with P15,000 cash prize while the runner-up will receive P10,000 and P5,000 will go to the third placer. They will also receive trophies.

In the women's singles event, the champion will pocket P3,000 while the second and third placers will get P2,000 and P1,000, respectively. Trophies will also be awarded to them.

"The tournament will follow the Swaythling Cup format where team/player A plays against X, B vs Y, C vs Z, A vs Y and B vs X," Nuñez said.

Davao City bets will likely get a stiff competition from visiting Bacolod, Cebu, Manila, Pagadian, General Santos and Cagayan de Oro teams.

The two-day tournament is organized by Medatta under Dr. Louie Metran and sanctioned by the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (Tatap) under regional director and Davao City Councilor Peter Laviña.
