Lawyer groups to remember Martial Law anniversary
By Carlo P. Mallo

VARIOUS lawyer groups will be staging a candle-lighting vigil later Friday as they commemorate the 35th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos placed the country under Martial Law on September 21, 1972 -- a memory that remains vivid among millions of Filipinos.

The lawyer groups, composed of the Alternative Law Groups, the Bangsamoro Lawyers Network, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, and the Union of People's Lawyers in Mindanao, will be holding a candle vigil for the judges, lawyers, and paralegals who were subjected to the abuses during the imposition of Martial Law.

Also, the lawyer groups would be launching the hotline for the Human Security Act Saturday.

The hotline is aimed to provide a quick response team to the abuses that might be perpetrated by the law enforcers under the guise of the controversial Human Security Act of 2007.

The same lawyer groups have called for the repeal and review of the controversial law, which they believe, is too broad in its definition of terms.

The candle vigil and the launching of the hotline will be at the Centennial Park from 4 to 7 p.m.
