Thursday, September 27, 2007 Davao's Marfori sparkles for RP in senior's golf
HONG KONG edged out the Filipino golfers in the first day of the Hong Kong-Philippines Senior Team Challenge, but a Davao shotmaker is keeping the home team within striking distance at the world-class Rancho Palos Verdes Golf and Country Club.
Joe Marfori paired with Iggy Clavecilla to pull off a 2-1 victory over Don Moore and Walter Kwong in the opening day Tuesday.
The pair of Tommy Manotoc and Ritchie Garcia also outgunned Bertie To Jr. and Brian Hsu for win No. 2 for the Philippines in the net aggregate.
The tandems of Rolly Viray-Manoling Chan, Francis Gaston-Earl McCarthy and Seve Roxas Chua-Jose Cojuangco dropped their opening day assignments.
Marfori, after a fiery first day, returned Wednesday and paired with Gaston in beating the pair of To-Hugh Staunton in the scramble match.
The victory evened things up, although matches were still being played as of press time.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Leon "Binggoy" Montemayor on Wednesday said he was proud that Garcia and Marfori were included in the Philippine team line-up.
"I'm proud to have a fellow commissioner in the team, and Joe Marfori, who is a friend and a classmate during my Ateneo days," Montemayor said over lunch he hosted for sportswriters.
The three-day match play event ends Thursday. (CRAM)
