REIGNING champion Good Shepherd Church (GSC) started its title-defense with a convincing 96-73 win over First Davao Missionary Baptist Church, in the opener of the ICBL Duterte Cup 16th conference at the Almendras Gym over the weekend.

GSC's Edwin Abillero led the charge for his team by drilling 15 points while Mineheart Adlawan scored 17 for FDBMC's losing cause in the Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP)-sanctioned meet.

Updates on the Kadayawan Festival 2007

Gener Orlain sparked Beatitudes Christian Fellowship (BCF), backed by Sulpicio Lines, to thrash Maa Alliance Church, 116-79.

Orlain sank 16 points for the Allan Josol-coached BCF, which is also sponsored by Joysans Tailoring, while Holy Child School of Davao player John Pinto led MAC with 13.

The nine-team tournament is a single round-robin format cagefest where the top four teams will advance to the semi-final round. The semis winners will arrange a best-of-three championship series while the losers will play for third place.

Games will resume on Saturday with the Temple of Praise taking on United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. while Deeper Life Church clashes against First Missionary Baptist Church at 3 p.m. (MLSA)
