No need for immediate rehab of Sasa wharf
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Sasa wharf just needs a few improvements, but no major rehabilitation, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said.

PPA-Southern Mindanao information officer Clarice Bautista said that though they are currently improving the wharf to further enhance its capability to cater to more ships at any given time, still the 920 meter berth of the wharf can cater to nine ships.

Bautista added that the wharf is being expanded by another 120 meters. "From only nine ships, we can now accommodate 11," she said.

Statistics from the PPA showed that for 2006 there were only 921 ship calls made to the port -- a measly average of three ships docking at the nine-ship capacity port.

She said some portions of the wharf are currently experiencing problems.

"Berths 4 and 5 seem to have a problem with the depth," Bautista said.

Reports received by Sun.Star Davao said that portions of the Sasa Wharf are too shallow for cargo ships.

Thus, Bautista said, they are planning to dredge the area in order to reach the ideal depth.
