Saturday, September 29, 2007 Davao Light-DepEd values formation marks 6th year
THE partnership between Davao Light and Power Company and the Department of Education-Southern Mindanao in an out-of-classroom values formation program is now on its 6th year with over a thousand youth and teacher beneficiaries.
This as the third batch of Outland Adventure Campers for 2007 completed their three-day Ropes Course on September 22 at the Outland Adventure Camp in Langub, Davao City.
The campers, composed of 26 students and four teacher-chaperones coming from two public high schools in each batch, underwent life-impacting, discipline-setting ropes-based exercises both in low and high elements. They were also taught organizational and problem solving skills on a team approach.
The camp project, which was started in 2002, is implemented for Davao Light and DepEd by the Project Challenge Foundation Inc., a denomination-based group composed of Davao City's well-meaning businessmen and American missionaries.
Among the ropes-based exercises and disciplines that the youth and teacher participants were made to undergo were the spider web obstacle, the hanging log, the catwalk, vertical playpen, trust fall, pamper pole climb, heebie jeebie, two-line traverse, log walk, and the zip wire slide, among others.
All of these activities require the youth participants' courage and guts. In the process, they are able to conquer their fears. Also, attaining the objectives of the various exercises involves teamwork and trust among peers. It also requires effective communication among participants on one hand, and between the participants and facilitators on the other.
To measure the effect of the program on the students, a post-evaluation activity is undertaken on the campers in the school that they come from.
