Council subpoenas DPWH, DBM for bridge delay
By Grace L. Plata

THE Davao City Council has required the regional directors of the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of Budget and Management to appear before the body in next Tuesday's session and present status reports on the Governor Generoso Bridge 1 repair.

Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang decried the seemingly very slow development on the bridge since it collapsed last March.

In fact, there is not one single activity that can be observed at the bridge site and the city has to suffer major traffic jams because of this.

According to Dayanghirang, despite the lobbying of the City Government, the much-needed construction of the bridge has not yet even started.

"For a highly urbanized city as Davao, infrastructure is one of the main essentials. Unya kung ing-ani kadugay ta pansinun sa national government sa isa ka importante ng kinahanglan, murag ngitngit pa sa alkitran and ubang mga proyekto na ma-realize (If this is how the national government gives attention to a very important need, we can never hold much hope for other projects in our city)," Dayanghirang said in his privilege speech earlier.

Thus, under suspended rules, Dayanghirang proposed a resolution asking the regional directors to explain the delay.

"We have to know the real score because the delay of the construction continues to slow the flow of the city's economy and entrepreneurship and affects the competitiveness of the city in responding to the needs of its constituents," Dayangirang said.
