DTI to award 9 seals of excellence

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao will conduct the opening ceremonies of the Consumers' Fair Thursday at the Atrium of the Gaisano Mall of Davao and will be awarding nine establishments in the region with seal of excellence in celebration of the department's consumer welfare and protection month this October.

DTI Assistant Regional Director Marizon Loreto said the awarding of the seal of excellence to certified establishments in the region, which have been practicing business ethics and fair trade laws, will be the highlight of the event.

"DTI has already awarded seal of excellence to 30 establishments all over the region last year, tomorrow (Thursday) we will award nine establishments, we will give eight silver seals and a bronze seal," Loreto, who was one of the guests at Wednesday's edition of the Club888 press forum, said in an interview.

Loreto added establishments from Davao del Norte will be getting the most number of awards.

"Davao del Norte has been consistent in having the most number of awards, it will not mean that establishments in Davao City are not practicing business ethics and fair trade laws. In fact, maraming nag-submit from Davao City, but they have not reached the deadline sa dami rin ng requirements," Loreto said.

She said last year, 12 establishments were awarded with the seal of excellence in Davao City including department stores and appliance centers.

"This time wala tayong gold awardee, we identified three from Davao del Norte pero hindi rin nakahabol. Usually, the province is the one who selects the establishments and DTI will be the one to categorize kung gold, silver, or bronze ba na seal ang ibibigay," Loreto said.

She said the selected establishment categorized for a certain award will also undergo further review conducted by the Regional Review Committee.

"There are documents needed to categorize an establishment for a certain award, for the bronze seal, an establishment should have a consumer welfare desk, it should not also involve selling substandard products, for silver seal, there should be an endorsement from a civil organization that the firm is into community kind of projects, while for gold seal, the establishment should be ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified," she said.
