Defense chief confirms plot to destabilize Arroyo gov’t
By Carlo P. Mallo

DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. Thursday confirmed reports there is indeed some movement within the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to destabilize the Arroyo administration.

Teodoro, however, refuted that his visit to Eastern Mindanao Command Thursday was a way of ensuring the loyalty of the soldiers, especially those in the provinces.

"This (visit) has been long overdue," Teodoro said.

He said after his visit to the other areas of the country, the neighbors in the Association of South East Asian Nations would be next.

"Next in line would be our Asean neighbors. The first one is scheduled in November in Singapore for the Defense Ministers Meeting," he said.

"It is true that there are plans to destabilize," Teodoro said, but was quick to add such would be a futile attempt. "It won't work," he said.

"They (destabilizers) will not get the adherence of their compatriots," Teodoro added.

He said the very reason why reports of destabilization are abound, is because soldiers no longer adhere to such kind of ideology.

"The people they recruit are the ones that speak of their plans," he said.

Nonetheless, Teodoro expressed that he is confident that the soldiers will remain steadfast to the chain of command.
