By Carlo P. Mallo

DEFENSE Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has said that military troops in the Philippines are winning the war against the insurgency movement in the country.

"We are well on track to rendering the communist movement irrelevant by 2010," he told Sun.Star Davao Thursday.

The defense chief also revealed the military has accomplished about 30 to 40 percent of its target in terms of addressing insurgency movement in thecountryside.

But Teodoro said the fight against insurgency is not only about defeating the New People's Army, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

"We are also looking at the possibility of other insurgent groups arising," he said.

Teodoro lauded the Eastern Mindanao Command for its accomplishment in the fight against the insurgency movement in its area of responsibility.

"I am very much satisfied by the way Eastmincom is doing its part in the counter-insurgency operations," Teodoro said.

He also reiterated his calls for members of the armed groups to return to mainstream society.

"For the sake of peace in our communities and for the development of our country, leave the armed struggle," Teodoro said.
