Councilor wants 2 more city districts
By Grace L. Plata

A RESOLUTION requesting the Lower House of Representatives to pass a law creating additional legislative districts in Davao City is calendared for first reading in Tuesday's session.

Proposed by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, the resolution seeks the establishment of two new congressional districts in efforts to increase the internal revenue allotment for the city.

Dayanghirang earlier said the only hope to get more funding from the national government, as a matter of strategy, is the creation of more districts. He committed himself to pushing for its realization.

Dayanghirang said the allocation for Davao City considering its size is not enough to cater to its needs especially in terms of infrastructure.

As each legislative district gets P150 million per year as congressional fund, an addition of two new districts will mean the city can also get an additional P300 million per year.

"For a three-year term, this will transform to an additional P900 million worth of roads, medicines, school buildings and other projects," Dayanghirang said.

Dayanghirang added this will also facilitate an increased budget in order to realize infrastructure projects that will benefit the city including the completion of bridges from village Callawa in Buhangin to Talandang in Calinan.

This, Dayanghirang said, will not only provide an easier and more effective transport of goods but it will also shorten the traveling time of people coming from Calinan and Buhangin.

Big trucks and buses coming to Davao from Bukidnon can use the bridge as an alternative route that will lessen traffic from the areas of Mintal, Tugbok, Talomo and Matina.

The completion of the bridge is also geared at enticing investors to capitalize on the Mandug area that was already declared as a Special Economic Zone by the City Council.
