NINE teams will battle it out for top honors when the Lipovitan Amino Sports Cup 2007 Inter-High School Basketball Tournament opens at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Lifestream International Academy (LIA).
LIA administrator Eladio Varquez, who is also head of commissioners, bared this during the regular Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
Varquez said Davao Jones Academy is the top team to beat in the cagefest sanctioned by Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Baketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) regional director Regino "Boy" Cua.
Also entered are Brokenshire Science High School, Davao Central High School, Davao Wisdom Academy, Holy Cross of Davao College, Holy Cross of Bunawan, Ford Academy of the Arts, Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai and LIA.
"The tournament aims to provide a venue for sportsmanship and camaraderie among high school teams and to also mold unity among participating schools," Varquez said.
The event is set to end on December 15 with the champion team bagging a cash prize of P5,000 and the runner-up getting P3,000.
The third placer will get P1,500. A trophy will be awarded to the fourth-placer.
Varquez said only 17 years old and below players who are officially enrolled for the existing school year are allowed to join the competition.
