Thursday, October 18, 2007 Fingerling dispersals mark 44th Fish Conservation Week By Carlo P. Mallo
THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)-Southern Mindanao is celebrating the 44th Fish Conservation Week that kicked off last Monday.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the dispersal of tilapia fingerlings into the 100-hectare Lake Leonard in the municipality of Maco, Compostela Valley last Tuesday.
Bangus or milkfish fingerlings will be released in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur Thursday as part of the weeklong celebration.
"We hope to showcase the bountiful aquatic resources that we have in the region," George Campeon, BFAR-Southern Mindanao director, said in an interview Wednesday.
Another highlight of the weeklong celebration is the "Fish-Tahan" exhibit at the BFAR compound. An exhibit and mini-market of various fish products have been put up for the public.
The biggest highlight of this year's Fish Conservation Week celebration is the launch of the Mariculture Park in Panabo City.
"By showing the people of the bounty that we have in aquatic resources, we are also able to raise the awareness among the people that we have to protect these resources," Campeon added.
