By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

THE University of Mindanao (UM) Cardinals routed College of St. Benilde, 71-56, to barge into the women's basketball finals of the 12th National University Games (Uni-Games) at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City.

The multi-titled Cardinals, coached by veteran Crisanthemum "Ining" Sarabia, were still playing Adamson University for the coveted gold medal as of this writing Saturday.

UM sports director Joaquin "Boy" Sarabia said, "We have a 50-50 chance against Adamson. But I'm confident that our team will give its best.

The reigning National Prisaa champion Cardinals demolished St. Louis University of Baguio City, 72-62, earlier in the quarter-finals.

UM had won two silver medals so far in the weeklong sportsfest for collegiate athletes.

Ernesto Alsa salvaged the silver in men's track and field 400-meter dash while taekwondo jin Ramy Viajar added another silver in his weight class.

Two other Davao City school teams, the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) and Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU), also competed in the Uni-Games.

HCDC won a bronze medal in the women's chess team event. Lady chessers Iris Hope Isel and Mari Cris Jurban clinched individual board bronze medals.

The women's table tennis team of Debby Mascarado, Mirabel Roferos, Jacqueline Caragao and Evelyn Nemino also gave HCDC.

The AdDU Blue Knights ended its stint in the Games with a 30-point loss to Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) Blue Eagles in men's basketball quarter-finals.
