Tuesday, October 30, 2007 Cost of flowers up by P10 to P50 By Joy Romares-Sevilla
COST of flowers have already increased by P10 to P50 per dozen, an owner of one of the biggest flower shops in Bankerohan public market in Davao City revealed Monday.
But Nida Bongcayao, of Nida's Flower Shop, said the increase is minimal as compared to previous commemoration of All Saints and All Soul's Day.
"Kahit na tumaas, mababa pa rin actually ang prices. Mura pa kumbaga compared sa mga increases in the past years," Bongcayao told Sun.Star Davao. (Even if the price increased, it is still pretty low compared to the past years.)
Bongcayao said the increase in flower prices started on October 25. She said such prices are expected to decrease and return to the regular rates after November 2.
Bongcayao said flowers that have become more expensive are the orchids, anthurium Holland variety, and roses.
"Mga P50 pesos ang tinaas ng orchids, dati P180 per dozen lang, ngayon P230 per dozen na. Ang anthurium naman ganun din, P180 per dozen dati, this time P230. Masyadong nagmahal ang roses, doble ang tinaas, ang P40 per dozen namin, P80 na ngayon," Bongcayao explained.
Bongcayao said the most affordable flowers are the varieties of mums, which increased its prices by only P10. From P90 per bundle, mums now cost P100 per bundle.
On the other hand, prices of ferns remain stable. Spring hair is still pegged at P20 per bundle, rosal at P25 per bundle, while baby's breath at P60 per bundle.
Bongcayao said there is a lot of supply of flowers this year.
"Confident kami na mauubos ang stocks namin ngayon. Four years ago, palaging ubos ang stocks namin kaya ngayon, we ordered 2,800 dozens of flowers of different kinds sa suppliers kasi expected namin na kukulangin," Bongcayao said.
Nida's Flower Shop also makes bouquets arranged in baskets for the celebration of the All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.
"Our bouquets range from P200 to P1,000, depende na sa customer kung anong klase ng bulaklak ang ipalagay nila, pero mas maganda kung iba-iba kasi mas colorful," Bongcayao concluded.
