Mango gab set in Tagaytay
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE 9th National Mango Congress is slated on November 21-23 at the Development Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay City, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) reported.

BAS said the congress is an annual industry gathering where various stakeholders convene to learn the latest technologies in producing, harvesting, marketing, and selling fresh mango fruits as well as processed mango products.

The participants of this event are mostly mango growers, input suppliers, buyers and traders, contract sprayer and service providers, financiers and investors, processors, exporters, scientists, researchers, and national and local government officials.

With this year's theme "Meeting the Challenges of the Expanding Local and Global Market," the congress is expected to create awareness of new technologies in production, harvest, and post-harvest handling of fresh mango fruits.

BAS added that the first National Mango Congress was done in Cebu in 1999. The venue of the event is rotated among the three major islands of the Philippines -- Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The topics for discussion range from the latest techniques and technologies in the production and production inputs, post-harvest and processing, market development and market information as well as institutional linkages.

During the congress, industry stakeholders will be allowed to talk about the challenges in the mango industry. They will likewise seek solutions to such challenges and grab opportunities for their growth.

BAS added that in 2006, there were a total of 35 exhibitors, while the attendees to the event reached to 550.

The 8th National Mango Congress was held in Iloilo City.
