Saturday, November 10, 2007 Soil lab gives aid to LGUs By Grace L. Plata
LOCAL government units can get assistance in terms of improving farm productivity and resource-based sustainability through soil laboratory services with recommendation from the only fully equipped soils laboratory in Mindanao.
Edilberta del Mundo, senior agriculturist of the Department of Agriculture 11, Mindanao as an agriculture-based economy needs these services in order to effectively pursue agri-based projects.
The Regional Soils Laboratory, which is located in Davao City, provides technical assistance in the implementation of government programs through laboratory analysis on soil and water as a basis of evaluating fertility status of the soil -- the most important medium for crop, animal, and fish production.
Tissue analysis, also being done by the laboratory, reflects nutritional status of the plants. Thus, both soil and plant analysis serves as basis for effective fertilizer recommendation.
Del Mundo said they also provide technical assistance to other government agencies, people's organizations, non-government organizations, and cooperatives that are involved in the implementation of the Ginintuang Masaganang Ani Program.
