Diwalwal, Pantukan top high-risk areas
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Southern Mindanao is monitoring at least five mining sites due to the continuous onslaught of rains in the region.

In an interview with MGB-Southern Mindanao chief Edilberto Arreza Friday, he said the mining sites of Pantukan and Diwalwal still remain on top of their areas of concern.

"These are risk areas in terms of mining," Arreza said. The primary reason for Diwalwal and Pantukan to be considered as a risk site is the fact that there are multiple small-scale miners in the area as well as its previous history of landslides.

Arreza said they have already coordinated with the local government units and the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council to prepare for any eventuality.
"They (LGUs) have already been provided with a copy of the geo hazard map," Arreza added.

The other areas being closely monitored by the MGB are the areas of Calapagan in the Municipality of Lupon, Davao Oriental, the tailings pond of North Davao Mining, and the site of Apex Mining.
