Friday, November 16, 2007 Regional airlines to form consortium By Joy Romares-Sevilla
A PROPOSAL to form a consortium among airlines operating in the BIMP-Eaga economic sub-region to avoid duplication of flights was taken up during the 3rd Bimp-Eaga Travel Exchange recently held in Kuching, Malaysia.
This was bared by Philippine BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council chair Mary Ann Montemayor, saying the proposal is an essential undertaking to further boost tourism in the four countries comprising the sub-region. These are the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malyasia and the Philippines.
"The proposal is important. The region can lay its respective plan and can look into other routes to avoid duplication of flights," Montemayor said Wednesday.
She said that BIMP-Eaga tourism players will meet in February next year in Davao City to finalize service flight packages.
"We scheduled to meet on the first quarter next para maibenta natin ang packages for the rest of the year," she said.
Montemayor also said the language problem is not a stumbling block for tourism development.
"The failure could be on the connection, and destination promotion that's why the BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council's strategy is to exert more time, resources, and effort to push the partnership with other countries so that we can see progress," she said.
