SOME 5,000 senior citizens are expected to compete and witness the RRD Elderlympics 2007 on December 8 to 10, 2007, at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Gym and SM City Davao.
Davao City Councilor Leonardo Avila III, whose office is one of the organizers of the annual event now on its sixth year, bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
"The first two days of the activity will be held at the RMC Gym where the sports events will be played. The culmination day highlighted by the social ballroom dancing contest, quiz bowl and awarding of prizes will be at SM."
Avila said 14 teams will see action in the sportsfest. These are Agdao, Baguio, Bunawan, Calinan, Marilog, Paquibato, Talomo A, Talomo B, Toril, City Poblacion A, City Poblacion B, Buhangin A, Buhangin B and Tugbok teams.
"Grocery items and cash incentives will be awarded to the winners. There will be free medical check-ups and other services that will benefit the senior citizens who will play and watch the activities," Avila said.
Events entered are field demonstration, athletics, basketball, chess, dama, table tennis and mixed doubles badminton.
The recreational sports events include paper cutting, message relay, candle relay, golf ball putting and fish fanning.
Avila said Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is a major supporter of the Elderlympics.
