Chess winners ask: Where's cash prize?

A PARENT of a chess player complained to Davao City Councilor Leonardo Avila III that cash prizes of a recent chess tournament carrying his name have yet to be received by the winners.

Neptali C. Batucan, Jr., in a letter sent to Avila dated November 26 and which was e-mailed to Sun.Star Davao, accused the organizer, former Davao City Chess Club president Samuel Yu, of failing to provide the cash prizes to the participants who finished on top of the event.

"Cash prizes of P500, P300 and P200 were guaranteed to the champion, first runner-up and second runner-up, respectively. Every participant paid registration fee of P30," Batucan said in the letter.

The parent added that Yu again held a similar tournament on Nov. 3 assuring the same cash prizes and collecting P30 registration fee.

"We believe that the guaranteed cash prizes should be awarded after the game. Until today, the winners have not yet received the prizes," Batucan.

Batucan, who wrote in behalf of the winners' parents, said they are inquiring on the delayed release of prizes.

Yu immediately reacted to the allegations.

Yu, in text messages, said: "The papers of the prizes are still at the City Accounting Office. But it's good they made it known to Councilor Avila to speed up the release."

He said he already explained to the winners and their parents that the prizes will still be processed since it is a government event.

Yu, meanwhile, was just replaced by Vincent Umayan as the new DCC president in an election held last week. (MLSA)
