Friday, November 30, 2007 The Durian Tee is well on its way By Imee Garcia
ANNIKA Sorenstam, Lorena Ochoa, and Liv Grundel were playing golf one day.
Annika teed off and she hit it long and straight. Lorena teed off and hit a great shot as well. Liv teed off and watched in horror as the ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.
Sure enough, the ball hit one of the guys, and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground, and proceeded to roll around in agony.
The women quickly rushed over. Annika dialled 911 and Lorena looked for help at the clubhouse. Liv Grundel immediately began to apologize. She then explained that she was a physical therapist and offered to help ease his pain. "Ummph, ooh, nnooo, I'll be alright... I'll be fine in a few minutes," he replied as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch.
But Liv persisted, and he finally allowed her to help him. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, loosened his pants and put her hands inside, beginning to massage him. "Does that feel better?" she asked. "Ohhh, yeah....It feels ‘really’ great!" he replied. "But my thumb still hurts like hell!"
In small golf courses and/or in city courses where the fairways are cramped, one has to watch out for errand shots. Sometimes you hear the word "fore" and you don't know where the ball will be coming from.
The best way is to duck (drop down quickly) and cover your head with your hands. That way, the target (meaning you) will shrink by 50 percent and hopefully, you get lucky and it misses you. If you're holding an umbrella, well, duck and cover yourself with it. If you're walking with someone, use him as shield. (haha!)
What is the meaning of the word "fore"? I wrote an article about this before. The word "fore" is shouted "as a warning when it appears possible a golf ball may hit other players or spectators. It means "ahead", and it's believed to come from the military "beware before," which was shouted when shooting battery behind the troops."
So, if you're not a golfer, and you happen to be on the fairways, and you hear someone yell "fore", do not smile and turn around to look where it is coming from.
Drop down quickly. You're not there for a picnic or for celebrity watching. Remember, the louder the "fore" the closer the errand ball will be coming from, and you will not have time to run to a tree to seek cover.
The Durian Tee at Apo Golf & Country Club is well on its way. A lot of great prizes are at stake. It is a four-day event. We are expecting a lot of golfers coming from all over to participate in this grand tournament.
For the ones who participated, good luck to you all. I hope you make a hole-in-one and get any of the three C's--the car, the cash or the cart.
If you don't play well, just hope that your partner plays worse than you, or plays much, much better. We would not want partners to start blaming each other for the loss. The tournament is not only for competition, but it is for camaraderie as well. You might end up fighting with your partner. Friendship is more important. But if we are talking about winning the car and sharing it with your partner, well, friendship can wait. Haha!
