UPMin parol contest open to all

UP-Mindanao students, faculty and staff together with neighbors in Mintal will bring the Christmas spirit to life in this year's "Kasadya", the annual lantern parade at UP Mindanao to be held on Friday.

The theme of this year's Kasadya is "Mindanaw'ng Pasko: Dalit sa Kaliwatan," translated as "Paskong Handog ng Mindanao sa Salinlahi."

The Kasadya lantern parade will commence at 3 p.m. from the Mintal Gym, passing through a portion of the Davao-Buda Highway to the Holy Spirit Clinic onto the UPMin campus. Chants and yells amidst the rhythms of the Indak-Indak will surely energize the foot parade.

Aside from celebrating the spirit of the season, the Kasadya is an opportunity to showcase creativity and artistry while offering a chance to win prizes.

Awards will be given for the Best Parol, Best in Indak-Indak, and Best in Dance, and other special prizes.

The competition is open to non-UPMin groups and agencies that will participate, such as the Regional Community Defense Group of the Army Reserve Command XI.

Some of last year's winning guest participants were the DSWD Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth and the Sangguniang Kabataan - Mintal.

For the Parol contest, the criteria are Design Concept: Originality, Creativity, Novelty of the concept and materials used (30 percent); Innovativeness in lighting design and mobility (25 percent); Relevance to the theme (30 percent); Presentation (15 percent).

Judging and awarding for winners will take place during the program following the Kasadya lantern parade. Prizes were donated by professor Karen Cayamanda, Atty. Oliver Saniel, UP alumni, and other University officials. Interested groups may contact the UP Mindanao Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at 293-0016 local 114.
