Monday, December 10, 2007 BFAD probes 'cockroach in black beans' claim By Carlo P. Mallo
THE Bureau of Foods and Drugs-Southern Mindanao is now conducting an investigation on a complaint about a cockroach found inside a can of black beans last week.
BFAD-Central Office is set to conduct an ocular inspection on the manufacturing plant of the black beans. "It will be inspected to see if it is possible for the cockroach to be in the area, the sanitation of the place will also be inspected," lawyer Joy Largo of BFAD-Southern Mindanao said in an interview last week.
Samples of the same brand and batch were already collected for laboratory testing by BFAD-Southern Mindanao.
Possible sanctions that the manufacturer might face, if the allegations are proven to be true, would include the imposition of fines and the revocation of their permits.
Moreover, Largo said the complaint filed would still be attended to separately, as provided under the Consumer Welfare Code.
Largo, who is also the Consumer Arbitration Officer, said a conciliation talk between the complainant and the manufacturer has been scheduled on December 18.
It was reported last week that a lady filed a complaint before the Bureau of Foods and Drugs after discovering a cockroach in a can of back beans.
