Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Last council session scheduled Tuesday By Grace L. Plata
THE Davao City council will be holding its last regular session for 2007 on Tuesday as it goes on a Christmas break.
However, lawyer Zuleika Lopez, City Council secretary, said it would not be much of a break since committee hearings are lined up within the break period.
In Tuesday's session, only three matters are calendared under third and final reading. These include the city's Annual Budget for 2008, an exemption from the Zoning Ordinance applied for a property at barangay Cumaling, Baguio District in order to accommodate a cemetery, and an ordinance granting authority to the mayor to sign a memorandum of agreement for and in behalf of the city with the Small Scale Industries Coordinated Action Program.
Calendared for discussion under unfinished business is the controversial application of NMY Burge Aggregates and Supply, which had already been calendared before but was shelved unresolved after a verbal clash between the applicant and a representative of the complaining residents.
The discussion would possibly lead to a vote as Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte during the session last November 28 said she wants the matter resolved with finality when it is brought to the floor again. It was deferred the last time as some of the councilors wanted to make an ocular inspection of the area.
In a text message, Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, rural and urban development, said most councilors have a favorable recommendation after last Wednesday's ocular inspection.
Fourteen matters are calendared under second reading, three of which are deferred items while 11 are new items. These include the Local Fisheries Code proposed by the committee on environment and natural resources, land use reclassification applications and a letter request prompting a proposed resolution to ban the transport, slaughter and selling of breeder hogs as well as uncooked meatballs and hamburger patties which are affected with hog cholera disease from Luzon to Davao City.
