Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Transport groups prepare for transport strike By Grace L. Plata
TRANSPORT groups in Davao City will be joining the nationwide transport strike to protest against the recent bout of oil price hikes. The exact date, however, will still be announced Wednesday.
The Transport of Southern Mindanao for Solidarity, Independence and Nationalism (Transmission-Piston), through a text message, said the protest will be joined by other groups like Kilusang Mayo Uno-Southern Mindanao Region, Kadamay-Davao City, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, and Consumer Alert.
"Dugay na ning gihangyo sa mga driver ug operator sa pang-gamhanan ang paghunong sa pagtaas sa presyo sa petrolyo kay nagkalisud na ug samot ang mga tawo tungod ani. Pero wala man maminaw ang pang gamhanan (Drivers and operators have long been pleading for a stop to the oil price increase because it's the people who are suffering. But these pleas have not been heeded by the administration)," Edil Gonzaga, spokesperson of Transmision-Piston, said.
Gonzaga added that unless the transport sector sees the government exerts substantial effort to put a stop to surging oil price hikes, more and more protest actions, like transport strikes, will hit the streets.
The group will be holding a press conference Wednesday at the Iglesia Filipina Independiente Compound where it will reveal the specific date of the strike and as well as other plans for protest actions.
