Ledesma: Garbage bins and stray dogs
By Jun Ledesma

CITY Hall ought to conduct an audit of the garbage bins it has distributed around the city.

Most importantly, it should likewise evaluate if the number of garbage receptacles assigned in each nook and corner is too many or too few for the need of clusters of houses and business establishments.

Post your comments here on the Makati siege

I have noticed that in not a few corners are just too many garbage bins that are not being used.

I think that we should assess the equations used on how these were distributed. At the end of Diamond Street, at Ecoland for example, is a row of garbage bins, which are barely used and some have toppled by the roadside side.

There are quite a number of these receptacles at SIR near a tennis court. But I do not see a single bin in Juna Subdivision. And so the residents there use instead the traditional plastic bags, which the garbage trucks pick up on scheduled time. Which is good. But why where they not allocated garbage bins?

At Guadalupe Village in Lanang, there are three garbage bins at the street corner where we live. I do not exactly know how many of households are using these but very often these are filled to the brim.

Which brings me to an allied issue of concern. Every so often, the garbage bins in Guadalupe Village are toppled by scavenging stray dogs in search for leftover food.

Our city (dog) pound office had not been doing its job of late. In our small subdivision, I would estimate that no less than 10 stray dogs are on the loose. There are also stray goats and, believe me, not a few cattle that you encounter now and then.
