THE Davao Integrated and Development Program (DIDP), a local government initiative chaired by Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, has been studying the possibility of having the Marine Fisheries Support Facilities Improvement Project estimated at P300 million.
DIDP said the components of the project were also included in the investment opportunities of the DIDP Master Plan together with two of the biggest proposed projects of DIDP for Mindanao--the Mindanao Railway System and the Samal Bridge Project.
The components of the Marine Fisheries Support Facilities Improvement Project are the feasibility study for the fish port; upgrading and construction of strategic fish support facilities and installation of post harvest facilities; and the establishment of distribution linkages among the strategic fish support facilities.
The construction of this project has long been noted to spur development in the existing and strategic fish landing stations not only in Davao City, but also in other Davao Provinces. It has an estimated project cost of P300 million as of 1997.
The strategic fish landing stations in the region include Sta. Cruz, Malita and Malalag in Davao del Sur; Panabo City and the Island Gaden City of Samal in Davao del Norte; Bunawan and Talomo Poblacion in Davao City; and Baganga, Banay-Banay, Gov. Generoso and Mati in Davao Oriental.
Meanwhile, DIDP cited the existing fish landing stations in the region which are the Sta. Maria and Hagonoy in Davao del Sur; Carmen, Tagum City, and Samal Island in Davao del Norte; Bunawan and Talomo Poblacion in Davao City.
On the other hand, DIDP said there is only one identified fish port complex in Davao Region and this is the Davao Fish Port Complex located in Toril.
With the realization of the project, indicative fish flow will improve and development in marine production will be conceived.
DIDP said the project only needs support from financing institutions for its implementation.
