SAMUEL Yu outmaneuvered a strong field to rule the Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Christmas Active Chess Open Sunday at the Damosa Market Basket along Lanang.
Yu was actually tied by National Master Irwin Retanal at 6.5 points in the seven-tournament but emerged champion via the tiebreak.
Yu and Retanal divided between them the P7,500 total prize for the winner and second placer.
Peter Tidoy finished third while NM Alexander Lupian came in fourth. Ferdinand Leysa took the fifth spot.
The tournament was presented by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte through the City Sports Division Office headed by Chrisopher "Bong" Go.
National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) 11 Director James Infiesto awarded the prizes to the winners. Jeanie Molina of the Damosa Market Basket assisted the organizers and participants with the venue during the tournament.
