Search on for dragon boat racers

DAVAO City athletes are welcome to join the Philippine traditional dragon boat race team and get the chance to play for the country in a handful of international competitions.

Ruditha Poralan, who formed part of the national team that won a silver and bronze medals in the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand recently, said athletes who are 18 years old and above who stands five-feet-four and weighs 80 kilograms may apply at our federation.

Poralan bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.

Her teammates, Sanita Kasim and Amina Anuddin, said they need new members to beef up their team.

"It would be most advantageous for applicants to know how to swim. It's very important that those who join the dragon boat team are also swimmers," Anuddin said.

They cited an accident that happened in Cambodia last 2007 where five members of the Singapore dragon boat team got drowned after their boat got hit by a barge during the race.

The Cambodian race was a men's open competition where only the Philippines fielded a women's team.

Kasim added they later found out that another Cambodian athlete also perished in the race.

Interested applicants may contact Poralan at mobile number 0915-7105067 or Anuddin at 0905-8127849 or Kasim at 0922-5404760 for more inquiries. (MLSA)
