Friday, January 11, 2008 Garcia: Lazy golfers, come out and play By Imee Garcia
GOLF is addicting. I know that for a fact. Once you start playing, you can't seem to stop. You keep practicing, you play more often, and you start upgrading your equipment hoping it will improve your game. You probably even bought gadgets that you think might improve your swing.
But then, when you stop playing for a few weeks, it is hard to get back at it. I was out of town for a couple of months, and when I got back, the Christmas season came. The settling down process took a long time--unpacking, a lot of laundry, arranging stuff, and then, there were the Christmas parties and the last minute rushing to shop for gifts.
From my room to the car, I walk past my golf set all the time and I look at it, thinking...when can I play again? Perhaps next week, or the next, or maybe next month, or next year. My golf set is gathering a lot of dust! Poor baby. If it can talk out loud, it would say that I've abandoned her.
It's time to get back at it. I'm not alone. Hey you, Mr. Golfer Addict, remove the dust from your clubs as well and start playing again. Many of you are lazy to play already, thinking, there are other better things to do besides play golf. True. True. The wives agree with that as well--one hundred percent!
Like pets, your equipment needs some loving and caring. Start cleaning them heads and remove unwanted sediments. Start rubbing your shafts up and down, but with care. Let them stand erect and shine once again. Wash the rubber with soap and water so that it will have a better grip. Start cleaning your balls and make them look new and ready for action. Maybe you will feel the rush once again as you prepare your killing machine.
Remember the times you played alone, the concentration, the constant practice. Stroke after stroke, thinking of ways to improve your swing. Remember your threesomes and your foursomes. Remember the good times you had with your partner--be it Mr. Titliest, Mr. TaylorMade, Mr. Callaway, or whoever.
The green fairways miss you. The water hazards await you. The pins are waving at you. And the eighteen holes open their mouth wide for you.
Golfer 1 (Paul): ''Hey Ricky, I just got a new set of golf clubs for my wife!''
Golfer 2 (Ricky): "Wow Paul! Great trade!''
See you on the fairways!
