Monday, January 14, 2008 Opposition to national ID is just a 'loud minority' By Ben O. Tesiorna
THERE are only few opposing to the national identification system that the government wants to implement, says National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales. But this is a loud few.
He said latest survey showed that majority of the Filipino people agree to a national ID system. He said the problem though is the "loud minority".
"It bothers me that the popular will is not expressed in the national debates," Gonzales said.
He said most of the mature democratic governments in the world have long implemented the national ID system and had proven its convenience and effectiveness.
"Ano ba naman yung katatakutan nyo sa national ID? It's just like having a school ID," said Gonzales.
Many fear that the national ID would violate the privacy rights of individuals and that government would use them to oppress the people.
Gonzales said the government can exclude any information majority of the Filipinos don't want to be included in the national ID.
"Kung ayaw niyo ilagay natin yung edad niyo, then let's not," Gonzales said smiling.
