Open chessfest in Malita; Davao's Yu, Cruz entered

TOP woodpushers from Davao City will have their hands full against equally strong contenders when the 2008 1st Benjamin Bautista Sr. Memorial Chess Open Tournament and 1st Quentin Tan Blitz Chess Open gets underway from January 19-20 in Malita, Davao del Sur.

Heading the Big City campaigners are Sammy Yu, who topped the Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Open Chess Tournament 2007, National Master (NM) Prospero "Bebot" Cruz and Dharim Bacus.

Expected to give a stiff challenge are Malita's NM Elwin Retanal and NM Jonathan Tan, who are bent on topping the event right in their own turf.

The champion here gets P10,000, with the second place and third finisher of the event using the Swiss System format pocketing P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.

The fourth placer will go home with P2,000, while the fifth to 10th placers will claim P1,000 each. The 11th to 15th placers will have P500 apiece.

The 16th to 20th finishers will earn P250 each in the tournaments sponsored by former Representative Claude P. Bautista, Mayor Benjamin Bautista, Representative Franklin Bautista and NM Jonathan Tan.
