Retail, wholesale prices of chicken down by P2, P5

RETAIL and wholesale prices of dressed chicken in the local market have decreased by P2 and P5, respectively, in a monitoring conducted Thursday.

The decrease was due to the decline in the demand of chicken meat two weeks ago, the Matina Meatshop, distributor of meat products in Davao City, has reported.

Nelyen Quindao, a meat shop employee, said Thursday that from P120 per kilogram in December, retail price of chicken was reduced to P118, while wholesale price was pegged at P110 per kilogram from P115 on January 1.

"The demand for chicken decrease, in fact, we can only dispose about 77 kilos of chicken a day, including the whole dressed and the choice cuts," Quindao said.

She added that the decrease in the retail and wholesale prices of chicken started on January 5.

Quindao further said that as demand for chicken decreased, supply of chicken this time is not also sufficient.

"Our supplier delivered 200 kilos of dressed chicken last January 15. They told us that they would deliver stocks on January 25. The supply also decreased, in fact, last December 31 and on January 1, we closed our meat shop because of insufficient supply, we only opened last January 3," Quindao said.

Meanwhile, prices of chicken choice cuts also decreased. From P132 per kilogram, drumsticks now cost P125; breast, P117 from P127; thigh at P120 per kilogram from P127; and wings, P120 from P130 per kilogram.

Quindao claimed that prices of chicken are expected to decrease in the next few months following a mean demand for the product.
