Acosta wants update on SP roof deck project
By Grace L. Plata

DAVAO City Councilor Ma. Belen Sunga-Acosta called on the City Engineer's Office (CEO) to render an update on the City Council roof deck project.

In a letter addressed to CEO officer in charge, Engineer Joaquin B. Cui, dated January 15, 2008, Acosta voiced the Davao City council's concern over the unfinished roof deck project.

"No updated report has been released by the CEO on the status of the project, particularly its completion, financial standing, and the structural soundness of the roof deck project," Acosta said in an e-mailed statement.

Acting in behalf of the City Council, Acosta has set a deadline for the CEO to comply with the request to submit a status report on or before January 21, 2008, Monday.

"The constituents of Davao City have a right to know about this project as public funds were used for this purpose." Acosta added.

Acosta, who chairs the City Council committee on education, is also set to head for Manila by month-end to personally follow-up the resolution approved by the City Council December 11, 2007 requesting the Department of Education (DepEd) to allocate funds for 467 guidance counselor positions for the public schools in the city.

The request was based on the data gathered by the committee from DepEd, which showed that there are only 43 guidance counselors in public schools here, while there are 352 public elementary and secondary schools catering to 243,996 students. The study was made in the wake of Mariannet Amper's death.

Acosta said if DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus approves the request, the guidance counselors would start serving by June 2008 as the shoolyear starts.
