Saturday, January 19, 2008 Gorres awes crowd in sparring
FILIPINO boxer Z "The Dream" Gorres displayed sharpness during a public sparring session Thursday in Cebu City, indicating excellent conditioning days before his highly awaited February 2 fight with hard-hitting Vic Darchinyan.
Philboxing.com reported that Gorres sparred three rounds each against lightweight Glen Masicampo and bantamweight Gil Millegen at the jampacked ALA Gym in Banilad.
Gorres reportedly landed with ease against Masicampo and displayed his defensive skills against Millegen.
Gorres had already logged a hundred rounds in sparring and will do eighteen more rounds as the Filipino pug tapers off in the next two weeks.
"He's ready to take on Darchinyan," ALA Gym boss Antonio L. Aldeguer said. "I have never seen Gorres so sharp and so confident."
The Gorres-Darchinayan fight is for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight title elimator where the winner will challenge world champion Dimitri Kirilov of Russia.
Darchinyan, a former world super fly king, has vowed to knock Gorres out come February 2. The bout will be staged at the Waterfront Hotel Grand Ballroom.
Dubbed as "Now or Never," the event will be covered by Solar Sports to be telecast in the Philippines and Australia and by live Internet streaming the rest of the world.
