OZAMIS City BPI manager Rey Urbiztondo trounced businessman Roy Roa of Oroquieta City in the fifth and final round to emerge over-all champion in the just concluded Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) Individual Blitz Chess Championships late Saturday at Deep Blue in SM City, Cebu.
Playing black, the undefeated Urbiztondo, the former mainstay of Cebu Institute of Technology, prevailed after 28 moves of a Sicilian Defense-Maroczy variation to finish with four wins and draw in five outings.
"I'm happy to win this event because this is all for prestige and honor. We hope to bring the best for Northern Mindanao," said region 10 coordinator Urbiztondo to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.
Earlier, Urbiztondo toppled Jong Melendez, Bong San Pascual, Jun Olis and went into a draw with engineer Rocky Rocky Rocamora before beating Roa in the final round.
It can be recalled that Urbiztondo settled into a tie for first with International Master (IM) Rico Mascariñas in the tough 1983 Cebu Open All Students Chess Championships was held in Jones Avenue in Cebu.
