Tuesday, January 22, 2008 Residents near Camp Panacan seek help amid eviction fears By Grace L. Plata
FAMILIES residing near Camp Panacan are seeking the local government's assistance through the Davao City council to facilitate a dialogue between them and the Philippine Navy fearing they will be evicted and displaced with the proposed expansion of the Philippine Navy Reservation.
This was the content of the letter sent by the residents aided by the Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay) to the City Council committee on housing, rural and urban development, thus the request is calendared for first reading in Wednesday's session.
Information gathered from Kadamay showed that eight homes were already demolished last December 2007 and that there are 21 to 24 homes to be demolished in March this year should the proposed expansion push through.
The letter, which is signed by Kadamay Vice-Chair Leon Bolcan in behalf of the residents, requests the city's help for a dialogue between the residents and the Navy, which will hopefully end with the extension of financial assistance and a provision of a relocation site.
