Church, house buried in Diwalwal landslide
By Ben O. Tesiorna

TWO minor landslides in the town of Diwalwal in Compostela Valley buried a church and a house after days of continuous rain in the area last week.

Mt. Diwata barangay captain Franco Tito said the incident happened on January 16 at Puroks 1A and 18 from 2 to 4 a.m.

Damaged were the Filipinista Church in Purok 1A and the residence of Emelyn Ordonez in Purok 18. Estimated cost of damage to property is P200,000. No one was hurt in the incident.

Tito said the landslides were triggered by the softening of the ground brought about by the rain.

A few days before the incident, the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council had alerted all barangay and municipal disaster councils to be on alert for landslides and flashfloods due to the heavy rain.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau has identified Diwalwal as a high-risk area for landslides due to the unstable soil condition in the area caused by nearly two decades of uncontrolled mining.
