Ombudsman won't conduct own probe of park yet
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE Office of the Ombudsman in Mindanao does not intend to initiate its own investigation of the controversial People's Park.

First because there has been no official complaint filed with them, and second, because the Commission on Audit (COA) is investigating it.

"We will be awaiting for the results of the investigation conducted by the Commission on Audit," Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Humphrey Monteroso said in Monday's Kapehan sa Dabaw at the SM City Davao.

He added that they are, as of the moment, leaving the matter into the hands of COA. "Para hindi mag doble-doble," Monteroso said.

The People's Park, Davao City's newest landmark, was alleged to have anomalies.

City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, on the other hand, is confident that not one single centavo was misspent in the P70-million fund used for the park construction.

Once the COA makes its report, Monteroso said, the Ombudsman will scrutinize it and they will not take the COA findings as it is and will do their own investigation based on the COA's findings.

"We will be reviewing the findings of COA regardless of what the outcome will be," Monteroso said.

The deputy ombudsman also said that if there would be discrepancies between the findings of the Ombudsman and that of the COA, even the auditors of COA would also be subject to investigation.

"There were instances before wherein the officials connived with the auditors, like what happened in the Diosdado Macapagal highway, the auditors were also charged," Monteroso said.

Monteroso added that as the investigation involves the auditing of funds, it is primarily under the jurisdiction of COA.

"But everything is still premature, we have to wait for the (COA) investigation results," Monteroso said.
