F. BANGOY National High School bet Danilo Engay Jr. bested Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School mainstay Austin Jacob Literatus via the tiebreak to emerge champion in the 25th edition of the BKCC Under-14 Rapid Chess Tournament held at the Blue Knight Chess Club along Bonifacio St.
Engay had superior tiebreaks over Literatus, 16-13, in the five-round Swiss System format chessfest organized by BKCC together with the Davao City Sports Council, Inc.
Literatus settled for the runner-up honors while Davraa Meet-bound John Ray Batucan of Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School and his brother Neptali Batucan placed third and fourth, respectively.
The Batucan brothers scored identical four points but John Ray surpassed Neptali's tiebreaks to finish third.
Holy Cross of Davao College's Mary Rose Palero, a former grand finalist in the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships, placed fifth.
She led three other 3.0 scorers John Gerard Acedo of the Jose Maria College, Nikki Erica Yngayo of the Davao Central College and John Leonard Ricarse of the Monserrat Camp School. (MLSA)
