2 governors, taxman probed for unexplained wealth
By Carlo P. Mallo

TWO governors in Mindanao and a tax collector are now subject to the investigation of the Office of the Ombudsman for Mindanao.

The governors might face plunder charges, while the tax collector is facing perjury and unexplained wealth charges.

One of the two governors has been reported to conspire with the entire Provincial Board in amassing over P1 billion worth of government funds, for himself and for his cohorts. The province of the governor is in Northern Mindanao.

In an interview Monday, Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Humphrey Monteroso said the governor and the other officials of the province seem to have conspired and that the illegal activities of the governor were conducted over the span of an entire term.

"It was his political opponent who initiated the complaint," Monteroso said.

The other governor who hails from Southern Mindanao is also being investigated for possible plunder charges. The governor, who lost in the recent elections, was reported to have amassed hundreds of million of pesos during his term as governor.

"It is also his political opponent who initiated the complaint," Monteroso added.

The case of the governors are currently at the level of the Commission on Audit (COA) as the auditing body still looks into the books if the two governors could have indeed committed the crime of plunder as their political opponents have charged them.

On the other hand, the tax collector who hails from an Eastern province of the region is facing charges for perjury after the said official failed to submit his complete list of assets in his statement of assets and liabilities.

Monteroso said the tax collector faced charges of unexplained wealth after he amassed numerous properties more than what his salary as a government official could afford him.
