Wednesday, January 30, 2008 Davao sends strongest field in Palanca Jr. tournament
A TOUGH field of 15 taekwondo jins will be playing for Davao City as the prestigious Carlos Palanca Jr. (CPJ) national tournament unfolds at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium Sunday in Manila.
This was learned Wednesday from Jose Te, Jr., chairman of the Regional Management Committee Southern Mindanao in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) based in this city.
The Davao Taekwondo Center, which Te manages as a regional team, will send a total of nine players who qualified for the national encounter by raking in gold medals in the regional CPJ tournament held at the SM Mall of Davao last Sunday.
The rest of the qualifiers come from Ateneo, which has two and EJAL, formerly the Philippine Army team with four players.
All 15 Davao players seeing action for the Manila CPJ encounter include top bets Jonah Cobarrubias, 8; Chantal Cobarrubias, 10; Rey Titus Nagar, 10; Regine Nagar, 12; Harold Nuval, 12; Rachelle An Bacus, 12; Clarence Nuval, 15 and Carlo Cariaga, 16 years old.
Most players from Davao have had their national exposures as either participants to the prestigious CPJ or the much bigger national inter-school during their previous staging in the national capital region, according to Te.
Te said the Carlos Palanca Jr. tournament is the breeding ground for future members of the national training pool in taekwondo.
