The incident also resulted to a power outage in several areas along R. Castillo Street. No casualties were reported.

Investigation conducted by the BFP showed that the fire started inside the Lupos residence at around 9:13 a.m.

"Witnesses claimed that the fire started in the kitchen of the Lupos house, may niluluto daw tapos napabayaan," said Fire Superintendent Rico Neil Kwantiu, BFP chief, in phone interview.

Kwantiu added that the BFP is still investigating the incident identify the names of the homeless victims.

He said the BFP and other fire volunteers immediately responded to the area.
"At about 9:24 a.m. na-control na ang sunog (they were able to control the fire)," Kwantiu said.

To avoid fire incidents, Kwantiu said the BFP is implementing programs that will give precautionary measures to the people.

Since the first Sunday of January, "We conduct the 'Lingguhang Babala Para Iwas Disgrasya,' nagri-rekorida kami in different areas especially in the major streets in the city to raise awareness among people and to educate them," he said.

Kwantiu added that BFP also distributes flyers on fire precautionary measures in the areas they visit.

"We send letters to big establishments like the Gaisano Mall, SM, NCCC, MTC Academy, Water District, Davao Light, Victoria Plaza requesting for their assistance regarding the reproduction of flyers, we are very happy that they support us in this matter," Kwantiu said.

"About 1,000 to 2,000 copies ng flyer ang dinidistribute namin, but it is already a big help to if at least 50 people will internalize kung ano ang gusto naming iparating para maiwasan natin ang sunog," he added.

Kwantiu hopes that the program will make a difference compared to last year when the program was not yet implemented.

Aside from the "Lingguhang Babala Para Iwas Disgrasya" program, BFP also visits elementary schools in the city to distribute flyers to pupils and teachers.

Kwantiu said BFP visits to elementary schools every Monday together with a mascot that draws attention to pupils.

"We also distribute checklist to pupils so they will know kung ano ang gagawin kung may sunog, we also provide flyers sa mga teachers na pwede nilang i-discuss with their students," he said.

On Monday, BFP will visit the Magallanes Elementary School. It already visited the Palma Gil and the Kapitan Tomas Elementary Schools.
