Gov't push for non-violent means against NPA
By Grace L. Plata

THE government is taking on a different kind of offensive against the New People's Army (NPA) -- this time with a non-violent approach.

Presidential Adviser on Peace Process Jesus Dureza said developing areas of conflict is the main concern of the government at present.

Post here your Valentine's Day greetings

"There have been no negotiations with CPP since 2004, but this does not mean we cannot further the peace process. We have to initiate developments in the barangay especially places that are not usually reached by basic social services. Syempre, 'pag nahihirapan ang tao, tumatakbo sa armed rebels who they think can help them and are fighting for their rights - reason why people sympathize with the rebels," Dureza said during the Philippine Army Reservist Association (Para) Southern Mindanao meeting at the Seagull Inland Resort in Guihing last Sunday.

Dureza, who was also the outgoing president of Para Southern Mindanao, pointed out the role of reservists in the peace efforts while saluting them for remaining loyal even if they do not receive wages.

Sunday's gathering was also for the election of the Para Southern Mindanao Officers for 2008.

University of Mindanao President Guillermo Torres Jr. who holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel will replace Dureza as Para Southern Mindanao president.
