Convoy is Datba bowlfest champ

BRITISH Thomas Convoy emerged champion of the Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba) Monthly Finals at the NCCC Mall B3 Center Lanes Sunday evening.

Convoy pocketed the cash prize of P5,000 and the champion's trophy, while Ian Ancheta took the runner-up prize of P3,000 and a trophy. Third placer Edmund Cambaliza settled for P1,000 and a trophy.

Cambaliza also got a trophy for winning the top qualifier in the eliminations, while Manny Nierra won the eliminations highest single title. Ancheta added to his feat the finals highest single crown.

Convoy gained the number one spot and the twice-to-beat advantage by hitting a total of 1,640 pinfalls after the eight-game eliminations. Ancheta was second with 1,611, Cambaliza third with 1,562 and Nierra fourth with 1,506.

Only the top four qualifiers entered the step-the-ladder format round where number 3 Cambaliza ousted number 4 Nierra, but number 2 Ancheta eliminated Cambaliza.

Ancheta's momentum, however, was foiled when he played opposite Convoy who showed more consistency to win the crown.

In the Saturday weekly event, lawyer Boy Risonar struck for 842 pinfalls to emerge champion over Ancheta who rolled 831 pins. The latter placed second anew while Yule Tanlimco (818), Davao Tenpin Bowlers Association (Datba) president Dave Guerra (785) and Mike Guerra (781) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
