Davao Oriental to focus on boxing, individual events

CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental -- The City Government of Mati and the provincial government of Davao Oriental are mapping out a five-year sports development program that would focus more on the promotion of amateur boxing and other individual events where they can produce champion-caliber athletes.

"After five years, our facilities will be upgraded. It will be improved because we now have money to do that. Malaki-laki din ang tatalunin ng Mati at Davao Oriental sa sports sa limang taon na iyan (Mati and Davao Oriental will have a big leap in sports in those five years)," Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat said.

Rabat said she and Governor Corazon Malanyaon also share the same mindset of promoting sports in the province and in the city because as she says sports makes one a well-rounded person.

"The Governor and I have one heart, one mind and one smile as far as sports is concerned. We will really work together to improve sports here. We are committed to sports and we believe that we can do so much in helping our athletes reach their fullest potentials," Rabat said in a press conference at the Casa Rosa here Sunday morning.

She said they are eyeing to promote amateur boxing since it is easy to maintain the sport. (MLSA)
