CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental -- The Davao City Durians hauled seven golds, one silver, and four bronze medals to lead the elementary division, while Panabo City paced the secondary category with five golds, one silver, and two bronzes at the start of the swimming competition at the Olympic-sized pool of the Mati Centennial Sports Complex here Tuesday afternoon.
Davao City was way head of Compostela Valley, which got two golds, two silvers, and three bronzes for the second spot followed by the Island Garden City of Samal with one gold and three silvers for third, host Davao Oriental with three silvers and one bronze for fourth, and Panabo with one silver and one bronze in fifth.
In the secondary division, Panabo edged Davao City, which pocketed two golds courtesy of Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) swimmer Salvador Angala III. The Big City bets also captured five silvers and three bronzes.
Compostela Valley placed third with one gold, two silvers, and one bronze while Igacos was fourth with two bronzes.
Angala clocked one minute and 03.12 seconds to bag the secondary boys 100 meter freestyle gold over teammate Edgar Francis Isaguirre (1:05.16) who settled for silver and Igacos entry Kevin Palabao (1:07.31), who took the bronze.
The 16-year-old Angala followed his fine showing in the freestyle with another golden performance in the 100-meter butterfly event with a time of 1:12.84. He beat ComVal tanker James Roger Cabatingan (1:17.00) and Igacos' Ronaldo Gomez Jr. (1:18.89), who copped the silver and bronze, respectively.
"I will still have three individual events and two more relay events. I'm aiming to sweep all the golds just like I did last year. I'm really hoping I can do it again," Angala said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao after his butterfly finish.
Panabo's Alvin Russel Dumagos registered 2:49.30 to clinch the gold in secondary boys 200m backstroke at the expense of ComVal's James Roger Cabatingan (3:03.41) and Davao City's Albert Justin Gonzales (3:03.64).
ComVal's Agatinto-Muhammad-Cabatuan-Cabatingan quartet captured the gold in 4X50 medley relay while Panabo's Dumangas-Diva-Labadan-Tan salvaged the silver and Davao City's Alh-Sanga-Uy-Pamilog won the bronze.
Swimming sisters Jean and Lean Cantil nagged the golds in secondary girls 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke, respectively.
Jean, submitted a clocking of 1:10.90, to outshine rivals Julienne Angel Zuniga (1:19.00) of Davao City and Marivic Pega(1:2.72) of Panabo. Lean recorded 3:04.64 over Davao City's Mary Pauline Fornea (3:08.45) and Panabo's Shenna Kai Ayuban (3:26.44).
Ayuban, however, came back strong to snatch the gold in 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:26.32. Davao City bets Zuniga and Ma. Jessica Pineda grabbed the next two medals.
Daniel Trinidad Sam jumpstarted Davao City's harvest in the elementary division with a gold finish in boys 50m breaststroke. She defeated Panabo's Karl Joseph Hintay and ComVal's Mohammad Sohiron.
Davao's Sidne Agor got the boys 100m butterfly gold over teammate Kirk Ebon and Jaber Abubakar while Davao's Protasio-Zuniga-Uy-Trinidad annexed the gold in 4X100m freestyle relay.
Davao's Sweet Angel Altamera ruled the girls 50m freestyle with 33.72 seconds while Justin Mae Dagdag added a gold in 100m butterfly. Davao went on to sweep the 4X50m medley relay and 4X100m freestyle relay golds.
The all-Ateneo team of Althea Benignos, eight-year-olds Janna Keisha de Luna and Paula Dizon and Altamera, stamped their class with 2:50.69 in the 4X50 medley relay.
Igacos' Sheila Mae Olia won the 50m breaststroke gold in the three-day swimfest that will wrap up Thursday. Action in swimming was to resume Wednesday.
